EPEP Online Electronic Personal Education Plan

Youth Media are delighted to announce completion of the EPEP Online project, which develops the Electronic Personal Education Plan, or EPEP for short, using the latest Multimedia technology.  Hosted entirely online by Youth Media, the Electronic Personal Education Plan program encourages Young People to participate in entering information into a computer with support from an animated virtual character.  The computer program talks to the young person via the virtual character, making them feel that someone is really listening to them.

Youth Media has worked in partnership with Council Authorities together with young people to develop a virtual personal education interactive self assessment program, which can be customised for any Authority. The virtual character engages with the young person to customise their own virtual character by using cutting edge technology.  The program immerses a young person in Multimedia interaction, by allowing the user to choose and customise features, culture and voice tones.  This provides a memorable and powerful experience which can also deliver fast and effective information and personal assurance.

The virtual animated characters deliver questions about a young person’s education and also assist a Personal Advisor in providing an immediate response and an effective solution for the young person.

The Personal Education program uses artificial intelligence to gather information from supporting partners, who also benefit young people by providing vital and effective dynamic help relating to education.

The program enables documentation, reports and education plans to be engaging and intuitive for a young person.  Through the involvement with young people, the assessment has been developed not just to extract information, but to engage young people in the decision and negotiation process.  The program accounts for multi-cultural backgrounds and disabilities by providing customisable character appearances and speech patterns, including sub-titles for the deaf.  A young person has the unique opportunity to prepare themselves for difficult or often embarrassing questions.  The virtual character can achieve this by allowing an individual to study and explore the Personal Education plan alone on their own computer or over the Internet.

The interactive characters encourage young people to participate in the self-development process to help achieve a constructive and successful framework.

As well as the Young person’s information being stored for later use by Personal Advisors, the information is used for instant feedback to the young person.  For example, if in the process of going through an assessment it becomes clear that the young person has a limited understanding the program will prompt the user with useful telephone numbers, web addresses, people and places they can contact for further information.  The young person can use this system as an immediate way for personal development and demonstrates a unique application of artificial intelligence.

The program helps the Personal Advisor to record and check important educational facts about the young person off-site. The young person will feel less intimidated answering difficult questions with a virtual character, which is fun and exciting. The assessment will also challenge answers from the young person to assist the Personal Advisor with evidential recording.

EPEP has been developed to organise assessments stored electronically. All information from the EPEP program can be printed off as a hard copy for the young person and Personal Advisor.  Statistics and performance reviews for the young person can be automatically generated so that a personal advisor can effectively log contact and evaluate the young person’s requirements.

The Education Plan can be tailored to each regional area to adopt individual community requirements.
